UNDERGROUND ROME TOUR
Roman Strolls offer underground Rome tours visiting Roman apartments located under the Basilica of Saints John and Paul on the Celian hill and the nearby Saint Clement's Basilica.
Our Underground Rome tour begins at the Basilica of Saints John and Paul (San Giovanni e Paulo). These ruins excavated under the 5th century church are home to a Roman residential complex (insula) dating from the second to the fifth century A.D. Well preserved colorful frescoes grace the walls of the underground Rome site. Tradition holds that this complex was the residence of saints John and Paul who were Christian officials in the court of Emperor Constantine (312-337). They were martyred on the site during the reign of Emperor Julian (361-363) and their tombs are venerated in the basilica today. An impressive modern Antiquarium exhibits frescoes, rare glass objects, Islamic pottery and Roman stone works recovered from the site in the 19th century.
At St Clement's Basilica (San Clemente) three layers of ancient history can be discerned in the levels under the basilica. Here our Rome tours of the basilica will lead you to the Temple of Mithras. This cult became very popular during the years of the Roman Empire. Christian churches then appear at the higher levels. The church on the street level is embellished with mosaics, colorful marble with geometric designs and frescoes. In summer, the Basilica offers classical music concerts in the enclosed outdoor courtyard.
