POMPEI and AMALFI COAST
Roman Strolls Tours Rome tours, Italy tours and cruise excursions
Among our most significant Italy tours are our excursions to Pompei. South of Naples on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii was first an Etruscan, then a Samnite and finally a Roman city until the fateful day in 79 AD when the Vesuvius volcano unleashed its fury on the inhabitants of this thriving town. The ash that buried the towns actually captured a moment in time. Artwork, artifacts and edifices were preserved. Even plaster casts were made of the bodies of the victims buried in the ashes of the conflagration.
Join our Italy tours of the city as it was the day of its burial. Pompeii was a haven for many wealthy Romans, and so the rich remains hold a certain fascination for us today. Villas with preserved frescoes, mosaic floors, gardens, Roman baths and forums, amphitheaters, triumphal arches and Pagan temples, and the basilica still exist from Etruscan to 1st Century Roman times. Many of the frescoes still seem fresh. The restored mosaic floors are spectacular and intricate. Two millennia ago people in Roman cities like Pompeii were living in houses and apartments with almost all the comforts of modern industrial homes we live in today.
After visiting Pompei, you will stop for lunch near the beach on the Amalfi coast. The Italy tours of the region continue as you follow the precipitous seaside cliffs along the Amalfi coast. The small isolated towns like Vietri sul Mare, Maiori, Positano and Sorrento offer vistas of a gorgeous azure sea. You will stop in the town of Amalfi for a stroll through the town, see the magnificent 9th century Cathedral of St. Andrew, get a gelato (ice cream), browse the shops and stroll the alleys.
Then, your party will be driven back to Rome to your hotel the same evening.
