Of our Rome tours outside the city, Ostia Antica offers a very well preserved ancient site. Ostia was developed as a sea harbor of ancient Rome and became an important and busy center for ancient commerce. Ostia is Latin for "mouth", the mouth of the Tiber river. The ancient Roman city of Ostia was in antiquity situated at the mouth of the Tiber, some 30 kilometers to the west of Rome. However, the shoreline moved seaward due to silting from the Middle Ages until the 19th century. Therefore Ostia is today still lying next to the Tiber, but at a distance of some three kilometers from the beach. Today, the site of Ostia Antica can be reached by taking a suburban train or a boat ride down the river Tiber. Impressive dwellings, artistic mosaics in black and white stone and travertine columns can still be seen at present.
