Castelli Romani Wine Country Tour
Roman Strolls Tours Rome tours, Italy tours and cruise excursions
One of our most pleasant tours is Roman Strolls' agricultural & wine countryside tour. Our Italy tours of the Castelli Romani region offers an opportunity to taste the celebrated wines and rustic country cuisine available during this excursion in the hills to the southeast of Rome.
The Castelli Romani were thirteen villages frequented by wealthy Romans during the Empire, then were converted to a series of defensive castles during the Middle Ages. With the Renaissance, the wealthy returned to the Castelli Romani to rest and have summer residences where many of the popes and cardinals were born.
Your Rome limousine departs from your hotel, past the olive groves, chestnut and fig trees, and through the vineyards and towns of Marino, Arricia, Castelgandolfo (the Papal summer residence on scenic lake Albano) and Rocca di Papa to an "agriturismo" farm in the Alban hills. This visit offers various local products of the farm including olive oil, regional wines, jams of wild berries, honeys, fresh produce, home made pastries and pies, breads, cold meats and cheeses. During the wine making season, wine presses will be in operation. In the summer months, barbecue pits are prepared for cooking meats of your choice produced at the farm. For the enthusiast of the old style Roman country towns, the town of Frascati offers locales where you can buy your foods from street vendors and sample the wines in a "fiaschetta" or old-style tavern or lunch in a typical restaurant. Wines available in the region include: Frascati Bianco--a bright straw color with a strong flowery smell and dry flavor Marino Bianco--yellow to gold color, smelling of golden apples & anise Malvasia, Colli Albani, Colli Lanuvini, Grottaferrata, Castelgandolfo. . .. and many more
