Tour the sights of Rome to discover the High Renaissance masterpieces of Michelangelo Buonarroti known as Michelangelo. Our Michelangelo Rome tours introduce you to the masterpieces of Michelangelo in Rome.
Michelangelo was born on March 6th, 1475 in the small Tuscan village of Caprese. His mother died when he was six. In 1488, Michelangelo gained an apprenticeship with the great renaissance artist, Ghirlandaio.
His uncommon qualities and capacities brought him to the attention of the Medici ruler, Lorenzo the Magnificent who invited him to live at his palace. Political upheavals forced Michelangelo to leave Florence and escape to Bologna. Relocating to Rome, Michelangelo carved the first of his major works, the Bacchus (Florence, Bargello) and the St Peter's Pieta, which was completed by the turn of the century.
The Pieta made his name and he returned to Florence in 1501 as an acclaimed sculptor, remaining there until 1505. During these years he sculpted the gigantic David (1501-4) The newly elected Pope Julius II gave Michelangelo grandiose Roman commissions from 1505 on. In 1508, he reluctantly accepted the commission of Pope Julius II to fresco the Sistine Chapel ceiling and completed it by his lone efforts in 1512. These were also the first years of the interminable project for the papal tomb of Julius II that would torment him for 40 years. Michelangelo referred to the project as the Tragedy of the Tomb.
After some years working on other important projects in Florence, Michelangelo would again be called to Rome to finish the decoration of the Sistine Chapel with the Last Judgment and to act as chief architect in the construction of St. Peter's basilica.
Before his death, Michelangelo destroyed most of his drawings. Michelangelo died on Feb. 18th 1564 in Rome at the age of 89.
