Gian Lorenzo Bernini in Rome
(Exclusive tour of Essential Rome)
This is the first of a series of specialized guided Rome tours designed for people who want to deepen their experience of the arts and the artists of Rome. This is a carefully studied itinerary to accompany the visitor in the discovery of the great patrimony of different art periods in Rome. During our Bernini Rome tours, we will walk with you through the baroque art of Rome, to admire the splendid works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Bernini was born in Naples on the 7th December 1598. His family moved to Rome when his father began working for Pope Paul V. The young Gian Lorenzo Bernini was fascinated by the examples of classical Greek and Roman sculptures, which later inspired his works. Under the Barberini Pontificate of Urban VIII in 1622, Bernini received a series of official commissions.
Over the course of the next 60 years, he was the most passionate and productive artist of the Late Baroque style in Rome. Bernini was one of the architects of Saint Peter's basilica in the Vatican and is the one artist most responsible for Rome becoming a baroque "City of Squares and Fountains". In 1645, Bernini's artistic ascent suffered a harsh setback after his faulty plan resulted in the subsidence and demolition of the Vatican Campaniles (St. Peter's Bell Towers). This error caused his disgrace and temporary dismissal as the architect on the St. Peter's project. Reinstated by Pope Innocent X, Bernini was to achieve a new peak of his career with the ascension of Pope Alexander VII Chigi. Bernini died in Rome on November 28, 1680.
